FAQs

How do I know if my instrument needs servicing?

There can be many signs that your instrument might require professional attention. The most obvious will be visible wear of strings/frets. Old strings can be harder to play and will also lose their tone and tuning stability over time. Other issues to look out for include any unwanted noises such as buzzing or rattling, high action, or poor intonation.

How often should I change my strings?

This varies heavily based on a number of factors, including:

  • Playing Frequency – Regular players may need to replace their strings more often.
  • Performance Demands – Professional musicians may prefer to change strings more frequently to maintain consistent sound quality and playability.
  • String Choice – Long life strings such as Elixir or Ernie Ball Paradigm can often last 2-4x as long as more common guitar strings.
  • Instrument Care – Humid or corrosive environments can deteriorate strings faster. Storing your instrument correctly, and wiping down the strings after use can significantly improve their life.
  • Sweat Acidity – Did you know the acidity of our sweat varies dramatically from person to person? Those with more acidic sweat can corrode their strings signficantly faster than those with more neutral sweat.
With that being said, here are some general guidelines:
  • Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin: 1-3 months
  • Bass, Ukulele: 3-6 months
  • Violin, Viola: 6-8 months
  • Cello: 8-12 months

What is your typical turnaround time?

As we are Brisbane’s only mobile guitar service, restrings and basic servicing are able to be done on the spot at your home (or other choice of location). Setups and more involved repairs may require the instrument be left with us for 1-3 days, which we offer a pick-up and drop-off service for.

Are your services covered by any warranty?

Absolutely. If you experience any issues within the first 30 days, we will be more than happy to take another look, free of charge. This should be enough time to make sure your instrument is performing as you would like. Broken strings are not covered, however we are happy to replace them for a small additional charge.

Do you supply strings or will I need to provide my own?

We stock a large quantity of different string types and gauges, although you are welcome to supply your own. If you’re not sure what strings are best for you, we are happy to provide recommendations. Direct purchasing of string sets also available.

I only have an entry-level guitar – is it worth getting a setup?

Without a doubt, yes. Relatively speaking, entry-level guitars are actually the ones that benefit most from a setup. More expensive guitars often play great right out of the box. However, more affordable guitars don’t always leave the factory with the same level of quality control, and the strings might already be rusted by the time it gets to you. For beginners, there is also the added benefit of encouraging practice and skill progression, as you won’t be fighting against an instrument that plays poorly.

Do you service schools?

Sure do! Please get in touch for a quote.

Can you fix broken guitar necks or bodies?

We do not currently offer body repair work at this time.

Can’t I just restring it myself?

Definitely! A basic restring is not difficult, and should prove no trouble to anyone who can follow a YouTube video. The only tools we strongly recommend are a pair of cutting pliers, a string winder, a cloth and some guitar cleaning product.
